Homesteading is a lifestyle that involves self-sufficiency, sustainability and self-reliance. It's not just about growing your own food or raising animals; it also means learning how to make things like clothing, furniture and even electricity on your homestead (or in your backyard).
The term "homesteading" was first used in the 19th century when Americans were moving westward across their country. These pioneers would settle down on land that wasn't already claimed by anyone else--and if someone else tried to claim it from them later on? Well then they'd have to fight for it! In order for these new settlers' homes not only survive but thrive in such harsh conditions as those found out west (or anywhere else), they had no choice but learn how everything worked themselves so they could fix anything when needed without having any help nearby…or waiting months until someone came along who might know what they were doing!
